What European Educators and Parents Can Learn from the UK’s New AI Laws
The UK has just taken a historic legal step: the Crime and Policing Act 2026 has officially criminalized the making, adapting, and supplying of AI "nudification" tools. For the first time, a government is targeting the creators and suppliers of these technologies, rather than just the explicit images they produce. But for those of us across Europe, this landmark law comes with a massive reality check. Laws Can't Block the Internet. While the UK framework is a move in the right direction, legislation alone will not make these tools disappear.
Recent 2026 data showed just 38 nudification apps across Apple and Google generated over 483 million downloads and $122 million in revenue. Even when tech giants pull them, new versions pop up overnight. This new legislation targets downloadable apps, leaving web-browser-based nudification services completely untouched. This isn't a future threat; it’s happening right now. Recent data from Smoothwall highlights a stark reality facing schools:
26.5% of educators have already identified instances of students using AI to create explicit content.
Nearly 1 in 10 (9.5%) have dealt with a student creating a fake, sexually explicit image of a classmate.
What European Leaders, Schools, and Parents Must Do Now:
We cannot wait for localized EU or national laws to catch up to protect our children. We have to treat AI image generation as an active, ongoing safeguarding risk.
1️. Update Policies Immediately: School child protection and online safety policies must explicitly address AI-specific risks, including deepfakes and AI-generated images.
2️. Audit Your Tech: Educational filtering and monitoring systems need to be reviewed annually with a specific, hard look at how students are accessing AI tools on school networks.
3️. Train Staff & Educate Pupils: Safeguarding teams need proactive training to spot and handle AI-generated bullying and harassment before it escalates.
The UK Department for Education has just released a completely free suite of support materials, including leadership toolkits and staff modules on safe AI usage. Even if you are operating outside the UK, the strategies inside are an incredible blueprint for European schools.
