[2 minute read] The AI Conversation: Finding a Balanced Approach for Schools and Homes
Technology has always moved quickly, but generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) feels like a bigger shift than most. Unlike calculators or search engines, AI doesn’t just help us find information it helps us create it.
For parents and teachers, this has sparked a wave of mixed reactions. Some see AI as a breakthrough for learning, while others worry it could weaken original thinking and stifle creative thinking. The reality perhaps sits somewhere in between. The fact is, the current young generation will have to use AI at some point in their lives and it is our responsibility to prepare them for that eventuality.

AI in Schools
AI is no longer a future idea, it’s already being used in many schools. Educators are exploring how it can support teaching, streamline admin tasks, and adapt learning to individual students. In the EU, the EU AI act now makes it illegal for schools to restrict the use of AI but it does allow them to filter students to specific AI providers and even set up specific controls within a specific provider.
The Potential Benefits
For teachers, AI can save time. It can help draft lesson plans, create quizzes, or handle repetitive tasks. That freed-up time can then be spent where it matters most: supporting students directly.
For students, AI opens the door to more personalised learning. It can adjust to their level, explain difficult topics step by step, and provide help outside school hours. Google app, Notebook LM has only evidenced how effective this can be, even generating personalised quizzes and podcasts for students to interact with. For students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), this can be especially powerful, offering tools like speech-to-text, translation, or simplified explanations that make learning more accessible.
The Growing Concerns
At the same time, there are real challenges. One of the biggest is academic integrity. If a chatbot can write an essay in seconds, it raises questions about how students learn and demonstrate understanding. Struggle is often part of learning and skipping that process can limit the development of critical thinking skills. In tertiary and professional learning, there is a panic over the use of AI bots that are able to complete online courses for students and professionals sparking fears that students, pilots and engineers are simply setting the AI chatbot on their course rather than completing the course themselves and gaining the skills they need.
There’s also the issue of bias. AI systems are trained on large amounts of internet data, which can include inaccuracies or existing prejudices. This means students might receive information that is biased or simply wrong without realising it.
And access matters. If only some students can use the most advanced AI tools, it could widen existing gaps in education.
AI at Home
AI isn’t just a school issue. It’s already part of everyday life at home built into apps, games, and smart devices.
A Tool for Discovery
Used well, AI can spark curiosity and creativity. A child interested in space might “talk” to a simulated astronaut. An aspiring artist might experiment with new styles using AI tools.
For parents, AI can also act as a support system helping explain school topics that may have changed since they were students themselves. But the risks at home are different and often more personal.
Many AI tools aren’t designed specifically for children, and they may not have strong enough safeguards to filter inappropriate content. There’s also the issue of data. Every interaction with AI involves sharing information. If children share personal thoughts, experiences, or details, that data may be stored or used to improve future systems. Over time, this creates a digital footprint they may not fully understand.
Another emerging concern is emotional reliance. AI can feel easy to talk to it’s always available and never judgmental. But it shouldn’t replace real human relationships, which are more complex but also more meaningful.
Keeping Humans in Control
Whether at school or at home, one principle stands out: AI should support people, not replace them.
For teachers: AI can assist, but professional judgment should always come first.
For students: AI can help generate ideas, but the final work should be checked and reflect human oversight.
For parents: AI can be useful, but it can’t replace guidance, boundaries, or care and parents should consider whether it is beneficial to use at home or not.
Practical Steps for a Balanced Approach
Rather than banning AI or accepting it without question we should focus on building AI literacy. That means helping children (and adults) use it thoughtfully:
Check information – Treat AI as a starting point, not the final answer.
Protect privacy – Avoid sharing personal details, school names, or photos.
Be aware of bias – Ask what might be missing or skewed in an answer.
Value the process – Focus on learning and effort, not just quick results.
A Tool, Not a Replacement
AI isn’t something to fear or blindly trust. It’s a powerful tool and like any tool, its impact depends on how we use it. The goal for schools and families isn’t to become “AI-first,” but to remain “human-first” in a world where AI is part of everyday life.
By keeping conversations open between teachers, parents, and students, we can make sure technology strengthens learning rather than weakens it. The future isn’t about choosing between people and machines it’s about how people use technology to build something better.
